In 1917, Baltimore-native Lucy Diggs Slowe won the first-ever championship match held by the newly established American Tennis Association and thus became the first African American woman to win a national championship in any sport. After her tennis career, Diggs Slowe went on to be appointed as the first Dean of Women at Howard University in Washington, DC.
